The idea of Actors Point Theatre Company was birthed because of research that Greg Wilson (our founding Artistic Director) had done beginning in late 2009 and 2010. Wilson noticed that the top 25 cities and towns in America, that didn’t seem to be negatively impacted by the economic downturn begun in 2008, all had one thing in common – a strong community and professional Theatre company presence. Since Sumner county already had a strong community theatre presence, why not emulate the other cities across the country that had both community and professional companies in operation?
After all, what is better than great theatre???
MORE great theatre!
Why not in Sumner County?” In December of 2011, Actors Point Theatre Company was born!
APTC was started with 3 major objectives and goals in mind:
To engage the most talented acting/theatre professionals, semi-professionals, and amateurs in Nashville and the surrounding region to produce and perform plays, musicals and theatrical presentations which add value to the lives of patrons of all ages. A theatre company committed to leverage opportunities that arise to produce multi-cultural arts programming (Musicals, classical music events, pop concerts, youth events, etc.) which builds community and cultural pride as well as enhances tourism.
APTC would explore opportunities to enhance and support local and regional education institutions by performing works geared toward student audiences of all ages. Additionally, APTC would seek to create educational opportunities for students of all ages through training classes, workshops, performances and involvement by students in company productions. The goal is to also train the next generation of artists through a “Jr.” Company that will produce and perform productions as well.
The APTC "Jr." Company was begun to bring up the next generation of artists in a professional level environment and through this program we are nurturing confidence, leadership and creativity in the next generation of workers in the arts, in business, and in education!
APTC has made a commitment to team with the local Chambers of Commerce, restaurants, retail establishments, hotel chains and the business community at large to attract visitors and to establish Hendersonville as an important place to visit by producing events and productions that draw audiences. Cultural visitors spend twice as much as their non-cultural counterparts in the city while they are visiting. In addition, jobs will be created because of the draw of Actors Point Theatre Company.
The Mission of Actors Point Theatre Company is to enrich the cultural life of the residents of Tennessee and to engage, inspire, entertain, educate, and challenge audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new works; and we celebrate the essential power of the theatre to help to stimulate the communities we serve both economically and culturally.

To date, we have mounted 25+ mainstage shows that have employed hundreds of non-union (paid) and AEA (Actors Equity Association – Union) actors and performers. Most every production has included a production staff (back stage) of at least 5 technicians, support staff. The average rehearsal period is 3 – 3.5 weeks averaging 4 rehearsals per week.
In addition, we have offered weekly one hour acting classes to local children and teens in semester blocks of 11 weeks. There are three classes offered per semester based on age/grade range. The average class size is 6 students. The classes run in the fall and again in the winter/spring semester.
In 2014, APTC partnered with members the Sumner County school board and drama teachers in it’s schools to produce the Sumner Plays Student Theatre Challenge. 2 Saturdays per school year (fall and spring) middle school and high school/college aged students from throughout the county gather at 9 am. They are cast in a 5 minute one act play, given a professional mentor/director / choreographer and are charged with the task of memorizing, rehearsing, producing and promoting their play or musical theatre number to be performed at 6:30 pm that same evening. The last installment of this event January of 2016) included 72 students. The students generated an audience of over 350 people and put on a show that lasted 1.5 hours. This has fast become one of the most popular events of the calendar year for students bent toward performing and performing arts.
APTC has been conducting a Summer Musical Theatre Camp for students aged 5 yrs to college age since June of 2012. The students come daily from 9 am to 2 am every weekday and learn, rehearse and produce a full blown Broadway musical production in 3 weeks. The program has grown in participation from 12 students in one camping experience in 2012 to over 108 students split between two camping experiences in 2016. The goal is to expose students to environment that delivers many of the following skills and attitudes:
In the 10 year vision, APTC and its programs and productions will be a preferred destination for thousands of visitors nationally. The residents of Sumner County and the rest of middle Tennessee will be vibrant in growth and have enthusiastic patrons of a cultural center and APTC. In addition, we will have fostered relationships with the country’s top theatre artists to both perform and teach. APTC has a vision for a school of Acting and Theatrical production that will be implemented by engaging leading artists to train and nurture the next generation of performers and producers in the theatre arts.
As we portray the human experience, our success hinges on reflecting the beautiful diversity of the communities we draw from and serve. Within our cast, crew and audiences we welcome equally and seek to grow with all who come as they are - in all of their distinguishing factors.
